MonteAqua – Closing Event and Presentation of Aquarium Boka

Held at the Institute of Marine Biology, University of Montenegro, on 17 December 2020, the MonteAqua closing event marked the completion of a project dedicated to strengthening aquatic biodiversity conservation and establishing Aquarium Boka in Kotor.
Implemented since November 2017 with support from Norway and Montenegro, MonteAqua mobilised €1.17 million to establish the Adriatic Biodiversity Conservation Center “Aquarium Boka”, including Montenegro’s first public aquarium and a rescue centre for sea turtles and other endangered marine animals. Workshops, scientific cooperation, the AdriBioPro2019 conference and a series of studies complemented the development of these facilities.
The event combined an in-person seminar with online participation. Its programme included institutional addresses, a presentation of project results, a virtual tour of Aquarium Boka and contributions from aquarium partners in the region and Italy.
As MonteAqua project manager, I presented the project’s results and its contribution to marine biodiversity conservation, education and regional cooperation. At the time of the event, Aquarium Boka was preparing to welcome public visitors in 2021.
